At the start of his adventure, Rex stands upon the precipice of losing all sense of hope or worth of human life, slowly forgetting what it feels like to admire others. At his core, he is basically good and finding others to have faith in brings him to have faith in himself.

A more in depth personality is here.
World History:
Humans share the fantastic world of magic, Terra, with monsters they have warred against since time immemorial. Time and again, the monsters would gain a Demon King who would threaten the human race- but each time a legendary hero would emerge, chosen by the almighty Hero Medal! Humans progressed, science and technology marching on hand in hand. Such was the cycle of history...
Until the hero Folio failed.
The ensuing battle between the entire human species and the races of monsters devastated the world, Terra now only ruins. The battle long over, humans and monsters struggle to survive in their hopeless world.
One such human, Rex Arany, is a fledgeling wizard warrior. A 'treasure hunter' (i.e scavenger) taken on a team to the deep catacombs of a ruined castle, they clash with a rival group of monsters and are wiped out. Aside from Rex, who in what he thought were to be his final moments, grasps the Hero Medal from the wreckage and to his surprise is chosen to be his era's hero of destiny!
What he's meant to do and why him, he has no idea. It's really just made life more of a hassle.
His plan is to operate from the shadows, rather than announce that a new hero has arisen. Whilst secretly searching for information about the oncoming calamity, he searches for trustworthy allies and ways to increase his own power to better prepare the world and himself.
Appearance:
Tall and gaunt, Rex looks dead on his feet most of the time. Though not completely scrawny, he's disproportionately thin compared to his height (7'4). His skin tone is light but further paled by his lifestyle.
Early on he kind of looks like he could be in better health, wiry and slim when he should be much more fleshed out and toned. The shadows under his eyes are practically permanent features and his hair is unkempt. As he proceeds on his journey his health improves and he puts on muscle to the point of being a beefcake, but he never completely loses his glum aura or sleepy look. He starts his journey with several scars, and eventually, he has so many it's possible to draw a line from his ankle to his neck without leaving scar tissue. The largest is above his heart, a burn scar which looks vaguely like a heraldric sun.
He packs some pretty plump lips for a guy and a beauty mark just above the left side of his mouth.
Abilities:
Much like all the chosen heroes, Rex is capable of a variety of forms of combat and can combine them for extra effectiveness. Like his predecessors though, he has an area in which he excels. In his case it's wizardry. He had basic training in his mother's sword style and martial arts style, but these take a second seat to his magic use.
He learned the basics of magic from his mother but otherwise is entirely self-taught. His magic is not particularly powerful when he starts his journey and focused on survival and utility. Camouflage, healing, telekinesis, levitation, buffs, scrying, traps repairing items, shields etc. Though he has offensive options he prefers conventional weaponry boosted mystically. He has barely begun to develop the ability known as Human Power, transforming fighting spirit and focus into superhuman physical power.
In the Rexverse most magic works around moulding mana into an effect without a cause, beyond the magic itself. It's all about knowing the result you want, such as to make a fireball involves learning the nature of fire and its symbolism, its associations and so on. Because he's self-taught and instead learnt about physics, his magic works by producing the cause by making the actual science happen. This unusual method is much more complex and requires vastly more mana than the norm and using it has caused Rex's mana reserves to be pushed to their limits repeatedly. As a result, he has an absolutely gigantic amount of magical power at his disposal. When he learns more traditional spellcasting he can cast high power spells constantly, often casting multiple spells simultaneously due to their relative simplicity. After discovering the idiosyncrasies of both types of magic, he refers to his spellcasting as the 'element' of Atom and develops its unique traits.
His most notable, original spells are:
Phantom: A spell that creates a simulation of a lifeform based on his study of spiritual beings, often in an exaggerated form to accentuate their strengths, which he leaves in essential places as guards or sends in his place into dangerous situations. Phantoms can be programmed or remotely controlled by Rex. Due to the complex and varied forms they take, Rex regularly updates the Phantoms. Some he bases on himself, his allies and enemies, but others are original creations. Perhaps the most crucial aspect of Phantoms is that when they are destroyed (which they frequently are), their cores fly away and can be used to revive them and study the data they collected.
Dark Side of the Moon: A spell explicitly made to counter his nemesis' signature attack, Naberius' powerful light based beam White Fang, but later adapted into more general use. It produces a mystical prism which allows him to control the flow of energy that passes through it, diffusing and redirecting attacks.
Black Dog: Black Dog produces an orb of darkness that stretches out and cracks open in a jagged manner resembling a stylised dog's jaw. The orb form is used to absorb attacks, and when it reaches its limit, it cracks open. The bite of the dog injects energy into the target, causing them to break up from within.
Atom- Real Laser: A skill that creates, as the name suggests, a real laser by aligning existing lightwaves. It differs from most light magic in that it is invisible and actually moves at the speed of light- this makes it very difficult to dodge or defend against, but it does take some time to prepare until Rex masters it.
Despite occasionally finding more advanced weaponry in his scavenging, he has sold it and stuck to reliable options that are easier to repair. Thus he is usually carrying a Lashnik-88 (a fictional equivalent of an AK-74) and a 1SK Combat Knife (a fictional equivalent of an NRS-2). He dislikes direct combat and prefers to prepare for a plan of attack, arrange for the odds to favour him and act.
He learns quickly and his analytical talents make him suited to adapting new skills into a unified whole. It's not that he can learn to do anything- but it's more that he can find something useful to apply to his own style from almost any source.
The Hero Medal itself is a powerful tool, but not one that Rex likes to use often in case his status as the hero is discovered. It can boost his physical and mental abilities, restoring his health and stamina instantly. This is done in a short burst that takes some time to recover the charge.
Early on in his quest, Rex is bonded to a fragment of an extremely powerful spiritual entity, the Kirin of the Holy Mountain. This immature fragment, which he names Indrik, is directly linked to Rex’s own spirit and grows stronger as Rex improves as a person, garnering spiritual strength. At first, Indrik is a hopelessly defenceless creature but develops into one of Rex’s most reliable companions and often acts as his mount. Indrik is not quite a kirin itself, but something unique.
Other notes:
Though his world has minimal direct geographical equivalents, he's from a roughly eastern European region. Probably the closest parallel would be Bulgaria.
Rex has a dog animal theme- not entirely due to his name. He is representative of a feral dog, a creature that is meant to be social and domesticated but has become... something else. On top of that, he is dogged, has a hangdog look and is dog tired. Amongst others.
