Daybreak Development-

Just a little thing to help me keep straight what Rex does and doesn't know, thought I might as well make it public.

Magic

School of Magic: Abjuration 'Abjuration spells are protective in nature, though some of them have aggressive uses. They create magical barriers, negate harmful effects, harm trespassers, or banish creatures to other planes of existence.'
Atom use- Rex's bread and butter, he has barriers for every occasion that make use of various forces, such as friction, Van der Waals force, kinetic energy and so on. He uses them to protect and trap. He has been known to use them to crush others, or to form simple weapons. Barriers derived from Atom magic is especially effective against physical forces but lacking in defences against some of the more abstract effects of magic such as curses, nor is it useful in reversing their effects.
Traditional use- Rex has little traditional abjuration knowledge and what he has is presently used to improve his Atom barriers, granting them some more mystical defence. He does find learning abjuration type spells relatively easy, but since so far Atom abjuration has been sufficient he hasn't sought to improve it much.
Overview: One of Rex's greatest strengths. This is partially a reference to Golbez, one of his primary inspirations, whose infamous Barrier Shift ability made him a huge pain and Ganondorf, who often hides behind a powerful barrier that needs to be breached using exceptional circumstances. Of his four signature spells from canon, two could be called abjuration- Dark Side of the Moon and Black Dog's Fang.

School of Magic: Conjuration Conjuration spells involve the transportation of objects and creatures from one location to another. Some spells summon creatures or objects to the caster's side, whereas others allow the caster to teleport to another location. Some conjurations create objects or effects out of nothing.
Atom use- None in use. The amount of calculation and energy required to warp space-time using Atom is currently beyond Rex.
Traditional use- Minimal use. Currently being researched, but low priority. The only use of it so far has been the creation of the Bag of Colding upon Maverick's request, a lunchbox that is larger on the inside and keeps what is placed in it chilled.
Overview: Currently not an area Rex has looked into much but one he's sure to encounter and learn. Both heroes and dark lords often use teleportation- either as a convenience towards the end of their journey or to escape the heroes when defeated (or to pop in a gloat occasionally). And how else are you supposed to drop a meteor on someone?

School of Magic: Divination Divination spells reveal information, whether in the form of secrets long forgotten, glimpses of the future, the locations of hidden things, the truth behind illusions, or visions of distant people or places.
Atom use- One of the most used areas of Rex's magic, his Scan is used to record countless things in easily reviewable data. This is most often done by making a ring with his finger and thumb and looking through it. Without Scan, he would struggle with replicating other spells. More in-depth scans are possible but take more time. He can see long distances and in the dark using similar spells, but cannot pierce illusions or see from alternative perspectives. It is essentially the ability to record the physical world.
Traditional use- Rex is deeply covetous of the power of seers but has yet to come close to cracking how their abilities work. He hopes that by placing a scanning device on Toki, he will be able to replicate it, preferably in a more controllable manner. He has developed a short-range form of remote viewing, but he has to stay perfectly still to use it, or he ends up falling over from the disorientation.
Overview: Can you even call yourself the hero if you don't have the 'scan' skill? This ability, often taken for granted and known by many names (appraisal, peep, intel, scouting) has saved many a videogame character. Rex has yet to develop a 'scouter' type ability to gauge someone's strength, but it's the next step.

School of Magic: Enchantment Enchantment spells affect the minds of others, influencing or controlling their behaviour. Such spells can make enemies see the caster as a friend, force creatures to take a course of action, or even control another creature like a puppet.
Atom use- None direct. It would involve delicate control of the target's brain which is as yet too difficult. However, he is capable of synthesising a few drugs that influence people's behaviour- for example, one of his favourite non-lethal tricks is to transmute air into nitrous oxide to render people essentially drunk.
Traditional use- An area Rex wishes to research in depth for a variety of reasons but has yet to find a suitable source to examine. It's entirely possible Adelaide may be that source if Rex can research her enthralling abilities. Such magic is, for a good reason, hard for a young man to find legitimate sources to work with.
Overview: Can you even call yourself a dark lord if you don't enslave the minds of others to make them a boss fight? Another trick I'm eager to have Rex learn because almost all his inspirations do something with this at some point.

School of Magic: Evocation Evocation spells manipulate magical energy to produce a desired effect. Some call up blasts of fire or lightning. Others channel positive energy to heal wounds.
Atom use- The generation of energy is quite tricky for Atom, making manipulating existing energy a better option for offensive purposes. As a result, Rex's main offensive Atom spells are Freeze Ray and Heat Ray, often used in conjunction and in that order to absorbed heat from a target and then focus it into a beam. Atom evocation is pretty low firepower at the moment unless supplemented with Atom transmutation to increase the available energy, at which point it can be devastating. This usually requires effective planning to pull off. The most common use of this ability is his telekinesis, which releases and guides the potential energy in objects to move them.
Traditional use- Rex finds classic offensive evocation so shockingly easy to learn he worries he's doing it wrong somehow, because how could it be so simple!? In comparison to the complicated Atom evocation, Rex can cast several types of energy generation spells simultaneously and efficiently, though he still prefers the use of magically enhanced mundane equipment for now due to his worries. If anything, it's used to fuel Atom evocation. On the other hand, evocation healing is a complete mystery to him. How does it work? What is that? 'Health' is not energy. He'll get it eventually, but it's never going to be something he'll master.
Overview: Bosses shouldn't heal. The use of multiple spells at once of differing elements is yet another Golbez reference, as a master of all the elements and often layering them atop each other. One of his canon signature spells, Atom: Real Laser, is this. Real Laser is his 'Kamehameha', in that it is a powerful move that starts as a game-changing trump card with limited use, but eventually becomes a default attack with multiple variations.

School of Magic: Illusion Illusion spells deceive the senses or minds of others. They cause people to see things that are not there, to miss things that are there, to hear phantom noises, or to remember things that never happened. Some illusions create phantom images that any creature can see, but the most insidious illusions plant an image directly in the mind of a creature.
Atom use- The manipulation of thoughts, as noted above, is especially challenging for Atom. So far only simple misdirection is possible through sound and light tricks. By studying concepts of sleight of hand and the mundane illusions of magicians, Rex can often hide things in plain sight, but they don't hold up to in-depth inspection if someone becomes suspicious.
On the other hand, because they use such little magic, they're challenging to find with magical senses. He has recently improved its limits by combining it with some more classical illusion magic, successfully creating a form of fabric which has actively updating camouflage. This was used in a stealth suit for Maya and a cloak for himself.
Traditional use- Rex has a decent grasp of classical illusion magic has used it to supplement his Atom magic, as noted above. He is still more aware of how to make illusions that exist in the real world to trick senses than mental manipulation, but he's working on it.
Overview: Not much of a strong suit of Rex's at the moment, but he's quite good at misdirection in general in battle, so it's something that slowly develops continuously.

School of Magic: Necromancy Necromancy spells manipulate the energies of life and death. Such spells can grant an extra reserve of life force, drain the life energy from another creature, create the undead, or even bring the dead back to life.
Atom use- None.
Traditional use- None.
Overview: It's going to happen, and no one will have a good time.

School of Magic: Transmutation Transmutation spells change the properties of a creature, object, or environment. They might turn an enemy into a harmless creature, bolster the strength of an ally, make an object move at the caster's command, or enhance a creature's innate healing abilities to rapidly recover from injury.
Atom use- One of Rex's most mastered areas of magic, technically all Atom magic falls under it. He cannot quickly change an element to another, but you'd be surprised what compounds you can craft from always present elements. Altering the properties of matter is simple. He has developed a large variety of buffs that strengthen physical capabilities. He uses it extensively in his item crafting, often to make creations that are technically mundane but vastly more effective than modern science could create. One of its most significant advantages is that, with careful application, it can bypass some forms of anti-magic. For example, it can be used to create mundane methane from thin air which can then be ignited into a normal flame. As long as the transmutation is performed outside of the anti-magic effect, there's no magic to negate. It can't be used for the more ridiculously advanced applications of traditional transmutation, such as turning someone into a skink. When it comes to alchemy, Rex's version is just 'chemistry but better.'
Traditional use- Rex's most significant interested in traditional transmutation is changing one element to another, which seems vastly easier than his methods. Imbuing his already souped up mundane weaponry with unique qualities has also caught his interest. However, he is also researching shapeshifting of himself or others. He currently struggles with alchemy because it's sometimes counter-intuitive to what he knows of mundane chemistry.
Overview: Most heroes find their legendary equipment or take it from the hands of their foes. What if a hero was the kind of dark lord who made those items? You get Rex. And what sort of dark lord doesn't have multiple forms?

School of Magic: Runecraft Crafting runes to cause magical effects of a more permanent nature.
Atom use- Prior to attending Daybreak, Rex had little understanding of runecraft, being difficult to reverse engineer from the items he found. However, since taking classes on the matter, he has begun to invent his own that allows him to replicate many of the effects of Atom. These typically have an appearance similar to circuitry and are often larger than conventional runes. Atom is useful in crafting them quickly without equipment.
Traditional use- Rex naturally excels at runecraft, finding the reliable and consistent nature of the art easy to learn and apply. He has already started to develop his own, though fairly often he'll found out what he's created was a waste of time because someone else has done it first and he could have looked it up. At least it's practice!
Overview: Just more for manufacturing, baby. Jailbreak's class is, and so is she.

Field of Skill: Physics
Use- Rex's number one talent is being able to combine knowledge from various fields seamlessly, but his number two talent is physics. The two go hand in hand, and he often thinks of problems from the atoms up. It finds a place into almost everything else he learns.
Overview: In a different life, without magic or living outside of society, Rex would be the new Einstein. Alas, he's a strange man who lives in a van instead.

Field of Skill: Medicine
Use- Rex is a good field medic and can patch people (including himself) up pretty well. He's not much of a 'healer' in the sense he can't wave a wand and make a wound disappear, but he can perform mundane treatment using magic. His knowledge of biology makes him quite confident he could do simple surgery without tools, but he'd rather not find out before he learns more. He absolutely perform a vivisection perfectly and that's a problem. After his ridicuously embarassing ulcer adventure, he's learnt a bit more about medicine and his advanced knowledge of biology helps.
Overview: Not his strong suit, but mostly due to inexperience. He's never really thought about it as crucial beyond treating injury until recently.

Field of Skill: Hand-to-hand combat
Use- Rex has a good grasp of martial arts. He does not practice a singular school, making use of his rare talent and selecting techniques he values and incorporating them into his own style, cherry picking what he wishes. This sort of thing is usually a horrendously bad idea to attempt, but Rex mostly makes it work. It remains a flawed approach in many ways, as a complex structure of related techniques produces a strong style that the user can be confident it. Conversely, Rex's formless form is aimed mostly at picking on the weaknesses of others, giving him a disadvantage against masters and specialists who are aware of those weak spots. Plus he rarely commits to attacks fully, ready to cut them off and retreat midway. He has no name for the styleless style. The exception is what little he knows of his mother's Arany Style, which he has supreme confidence in but rarely uses- when he does, it's a sign he will do anything to win and will not retreat. He hasn't adjusted it to take into account he has two arms and legs and refuses to try. It's perfect the way it is, how dare you imply his mother's style isn't perfect.
Overview: Rex usually supplements his martial arts with his magic, and he doesn't have much passion for martial arts in itself, seeing it only as a means to an end. When ~Thrilled~, hand-to-hand is one of the skillsets most likely to have an improvised new technique develop

Field of Skill: Melee weaponry
Use- Much like his hand-to-hand skills; Rex can do the usually arduous task of having a grasp of numerous sword styles and to a lesser extent other weapons. Same as hand-to-hand, he doesn't commit to any style except his mother's, which again is made for one armed one legged people but works great and also he didn't know her long enough to master it himself. He's able to use his advanced knowledge of physics and other weapons to become roughly competent with most melee weapons quickly, but same as hand-to-hand, he's not beating any masters with that.
Overview: Anything in hand to hand you can also say about this. I probably should have just said 'melee combat', but it looked weird having a huge segment. Deal with it.

Field of Skill: Firearms
Use- Rex is best with assault rifles because he follows the rule that the only time you point your gun at someone is when you want it to die and when he wants something to die, he really wants it to die. He can and does use other guns as necessary, but his preference will always be for a rifle.
Overview: He's a stickler for gun safety and expects (and enforces) that of others. His current gun started as an AK-47 which has had every single part of it replaced with a superior piece of his design over time.

Field of Skill: Languages
Use- Rex is stupid good at languages and doesn't get why other people aren't as good at it. It's just memorising a bunch of words and rules, and you do that all the time. Here. Ginglyform. That's a new word. It means 'hinge shaped.' Now do that several times in a row, and you've got a language! This method of learning means until he has more experience he sometimes loses the nuance of conversation and will use words that are technically correct but weird choices or have odd implications. But then again, he talks like that anyway.
Overview: Currently can fluently speak Bulgarian, English, Russian, Latin, French, German and conversationally speak Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Italian and Punjabi. He can read more, including some non-human languages but couldn't carry a conversation in them.

Field of Skill: Stealth
Use- You'd be surprised how sneaky a 7'4 guy can be, and many people frequently are when he turns up right behind them without warning. He's no ninja, but with an observational eye, he's good at knowing where people look and what they look for. Then he makes sure he's not there and not that. He's good at misdirection too, but there's only so much you can do as a giant.
Overview: Using sound stealth principles and his illusion magic, he's decent at going undetected.
