[ His boots come off naturally, not like some westerners where it's a stumbling block or afterthought. It's a Bulgarian thing too.
Rex examines the enviroment with an impassive eye, coming up with a wide variety of theories as to why exactly she lives alone in such a big place. Comparatively, it's luxury to him, but he doesn't let it show on his tombstone face. ]
Ah. Thank you.
[ He can't hide the slightly predatory look in his eye when he locks onto that pizza though.
Actually, he's made an assumption it would be best to check- ]
Oh— Yeah, don't worry about anyone else being here. The rest of my family lives in New York, so it's not like they can just pop in on us.
[Chidori turns toward the kitchen pulling out a large bottle of soda and two glasses so they may share. Sure, they could use the dining table that's in the kitchen, but she doesn't feel the need to. She'd rather use the cramped space on the coffee table so she can sit on the couch.]
[ Part of him wants to pry, but the rest is very socially awkward and doesn't know what's rude or not to ask about. Life is hard as a giant feral man. ]
That certainly makes the task easier to complete, at least.
[ He hasn't shared a meal in many years either and takes a seat- unable to tear his eyes off of the pizza box. He isn't literally drooling, but it's close. But technically it's her meal and thus he genuinely expects he's just going to be given whatever scraps she doesn't want. ]
[Chidori pours the soda and foists the second glass at him before throwing open the top of the pizza box. It's the closest to New York style as she could get, and it's clear that it's half and half. One side extra cheese, one side pepperoni.]
I didn't know what other toppings you like so I left your part with just cheese. That should be fine, right?
[ It’s astoundingly sad that half a cheese pizza is nicest gift he’s been given in twelve years but maybe more sad that he doesn’t realise it aside from a brief widening of his eyes and a sudden, shocking and instinctive affection for her, which he will hide as if it’s shameful. This is what happens when you feed stray dogs. ]
My favourite, as it so happens.
[ The second he has the go ahead to eat, he starts. It’s not that he’s sloppy. It just vanishes, quick as he can manage without making a mess. That might cost him a crumb. ]
[Kaname isn't at all dainty with her own food, but jeez. He really inhales it! She'll be on her third slice staring at him in disbelief. Her mouth full of pizza and a string of cheese connecting her lips still to the slice.
[ It's only when there's not a crumb of his half left that he drinks. It's the same philosophy- he puts the glass to his lips and doesn't remove it until it's all gone. He tips backwards a bit so that he can hold the glass straight down so he doesn't miss a drop.
It's when he's done with that he notices her staring. ]
[ He looks a little embarrassed at that- he hates showing weakness, which this suddenly seems like. He hides it by drinking his new glass, same method but slightly slower. Once it's empty he finally replies. ]
[Leaving it at that Kaname pours them both new glasses of soda emptying the bottle out in his cup. It's fine. She doesn't need that much junk food. She's a well fed girl. A bit of softness still hiding her muscles despite her being athletic because of her eating habits.]
Anyway, about my ghost. I've been having some dreams where I hear that voice recently. Do you think it means something?
[ Rex, on the other hand, is a bit underweight. It doesn't suit his gigantic height, all slim muscles on wide shoulders and long limbs. The only parts of him that have any extra softness are his plump lips and somehow his shapely butt. Good genes maybe. But thanks to his habit of being heavily covered in layers, good luck telling any of that. Aside from the lips. Those stick out.
Anyway. ]
Hmm. It may be the case that it takes some time for a full manifestation and this is its build up.
[ At least he answers before he chugs the last of the soda this time. ]
I want to try warding your home- it's easier to prevent entry than banish something, so if it's coming and going that may be a weakness.
Salt is effective but very easily broken. Better for situations where quick protection is required, not longterm. I've been trying to isolate what exactly about sodium chloride is so effective at discouraging spirits. But so far nothing conclusive.
[ He's kind of a weird wizard.
He starts rummaging in his bag, pulling out a few tiny tins of paint. The sort you'd use to paint a tiny overpriced figurine, yah know, if you're a nerd. ]
For more permanent solutions, I usually favour a totem. We can synchronise it to your energy and it's quite effective. How are you at carving?
Probably shit at it? I dunno, I've never really tried.
[What the crap does a totem do to ward away spirits? SHE'S SO LOST! All her fiction books are science fiction or basic bitch supernatural. All this actual occult nonsense is way over her head.]
[ Which is why he also pulls out a little wooden figure, roughly human-shaped, and a whittling knife. He's not great at carving either, but he's okay. ]
It'll probably be fine if you just add some finishing touches. Whatever you want to add to it, just so it's... personalised.
[ He gestures at the paint as well as the knife. ]
Not all. Just put your mark on it- in some way, make it something that is your own. By knife or paint or anything else.
[ Even though it's a tiny knife he still keeps on an eye on it- he has no reason in the world to think she'd ever point it at him, but all the same...
He's also ready to grab her wrist if it looks like she's gonna hurt herself.]
If you have something here already that is entirely yours, crafted by your hands, we can use that instead. But if it fails to protect this space it may break.
[Her eyes flit nervously around the room until something catches her interest. It seems to spark some inspiration in her, and slowly she begins to carve carefully away at the wood. It's...
Not at all expert. A simple way of cutting and she's making the features like a child would on a drawing. But it's the best she can do for now. The figure starts to gain short hair and a simplified smile. An apron cut onto the body, and a pair of gloves. Like the picture of her mother she has sitting up on the television stand in front of them.]
[ Rex watches, though not intently. Just keeping an eye on her hands, in case she's ever in danger of slipping. ]
Absolutely.
[ He looks over the simple doll and being Rex, he almost immediately makes the connection- he memorised everything in the room while making a note of anything he could use as a weapon if he needed to.
Good choice, he thinks. A mother, or perhaps an elder sister... what could there be better to protect someone? Confidence in the person she is modelling her figure on may increase its power. ]
It doesn't need to be much- just enough you can say it's your creation.
[ He stares for a few seconds, but his expectant stare isn't much different to his usual stare so- ]
Oh, I meant that literally. Please say 'this is my creation.'
[ He actually hasn't done this before, but he holds one hand up to his eye and forms a loop with the fingers to look through. Energies looking pretty synchronised to him. ]
Now, simply select where you would like to place it. On display or hidden makes no difference, but it does need to be somewhere it will rarely, if ever, be moved. As you put it there, focus on the thought that it is yours and it will protect you.
[ And that's it. That and all the damn enchantments he put on that wood but it's fine. He doesn't mind. ]
[Uncertainty is clear on her face, but she complies. Her hand gripping the wooden figure tightly as she stands to leave the living room to put it in her bedroom. She chooses a spot in the drawer of her nightstand. Setting it down on its side to fit. Chidori does as Rex says, but is a little doubtful it will work. After closing up the drawer she returns to him on the couch.]

...What? Do I have something on my face?

I wouldn't say... starving as such.

[ That's a perfectly valid explanation, right? Not worth thinking about why a guy might do that. It's fine. ]
It was delicious, hence my fervour.
[ And an extra explanation, even if he's well aware it's kinda a limp one. ]
